Disc-shaped loom weight bearing the impression of a three-lobed bronze pin holder
Clay stamped disc-shaped loom weight. One side is flat and the other slightly curved. It bears two through-holes for suspension, and the imprint of a three-lobed bronze pin holder. A pleasant surprise was the finding in another space of the excavation of the object with which the imprint was made, an unusual fact for the excavation data..
The presence of spindle-whorls and loom weights may have held a particular symbolic significance within the context of ritual expression, as they have also been found in sanctuaries as votive offerings. The association of spindle-whorls with femininity as votive offerings is a characteristic symbol of their role, and it is seen as evidence of the increasing involvement of women in worship. The significance and interpretation of the stamps are generally problematic. However, stamping primarily relates to the preferences and specifications set by the party who commissioned the objects to the potters, which could range stating ownership to marking and numbering the warp threads on the loom. The loom weights were found scattered in the building of the accompanying facilities of the Sanctuary of Demeter and were not concentrated in any specific room.
